Dad’s Tools – Friday, Dec 21, 2012

Dad, don’t be afraid to hold and cuddle the baby doll. You won’t look like a sissy. As a matter of fact, I think you really need to let your children see you modeling how to hold and care for an infant. Too many men are afraid that babies will break. This is a great opportunity for you!

Rags for a King! – Manger Build Devotion for Friday, December 21 from Mike Young on Vimeo.

Let your kids wrap the baby doll in rags. Then, if you know how, (if not ask your wife to do this) demonstrate how to ‘swaddle’ a baby. When a baby is swaddled tightly they feel warm and safe.

Let your kids, even the boys, practice this. If you have daughters, they will probably gravitate naturally to the idea. Make sure you celebrate those maternal instincts that God placed in them. Talk about how she will be a ‘great mommy some day’. Dad, your willingness to do this in front of your sons will convey a strong message to them as well. If they see you, as a man who’s comfortable with handling a baby, they’ll not be fearful themselves. Talk about how they will one day be daddies who will need to protect and provide for their families. That includes helping take care of their sons and daughters.

Be mindful of the fact that as you demonstrate and talk about this, you are casting vision for future generations of your own family. Tell them how you are looking forward to being a grandfather who shares his life with their children. Remember, your instruction and modeling now could impact many generations. Keep Deuteronomy 7:9 in mind as you do this,

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

Also, be aware that tomorrow’s devotion has a bit of a twist to it so you may want to look ahead to get ready.
